Thanks [8D]
We'd also need some open (ok for commercial use) coastline maps if we want to do this.

I don't support the need for lake inclusion. The game requires they be below sea level for them to be water. Lake Michigan is at 577' ASL. This means that a ship on the lake is 600' lower than the shore around it, which may have significant game ramifications and is just funky when you think about working with it. Command is about NAVAL operations on the OCEAN, IMHO. I'm just glad we have the Suez and Panama canals available. Adding lake ops is a very distant goal, IMHO.

Just think about all the great things you could do with a SSBN in the Great Lakes. [:D]

Navy frigates used to cruise the Great Lakes every summer up until '99. Granted, it was in a more or less ceremonial role, but still. No, it wouldn't make sense to have the
USS George Washington and a Kirov battle cruiser duke it out on one of the Great Lakes, but as the original poster noted, they could be fun for small scenarios. Minute ones maybe. Whose to say there will never be some pirates on Lake Superior? Or the Canadians get frisky and decide to re-create the Battle of Lake Erie??? This sim is billed as making the world your playground, well I would love the Great Lakes in mine! haha
Though, I will allow that there are more pressing things to work on than Lakes, but someday it would be cool. I shall wait patiently [8D]

The Great Lakes will most likely be "US and/or Canada vs. Criminals or Terrorists." However, the African Great Lakes might actually see some low level naval action...not all of the countries that share the African Great Lakes "play well with others." They're more in the "runs with scissors" category.

I would think for what this game is built for, this would be a much lower priority over some of the other enhancements needed/wanted.

Absolutely. I know this is not something likely to be done right away. I just wanted to share the small amount of data I was able to find in case it was of any use. And it's an interesting topic to discuss.
The flip side of this issue, by the way, is that it is possible to put ships in Death Valley, as it is below sea level. Yes, I tried this.

That's a really great point regarding elevation and depth. I wonder if in fact the game engine
could handle that?

I remember USS
Estocin (FFG-15) docking in Duluth MN for a few days one summer. I regret missing a chance of a tour at the time.

Coasties vs Mounties!
Wish I would have known about the summer cruises back when I lived in Michigan...
