Promoting Generals

I'm confused on how Generals get promoted. Is it based on their experience level from battle field wins/losses, automatically done at a set time, or something else?
Here is the reason I'm asking this.
Playing the union against the AI, I have noticed that when my Generals win a battle they don't receive any experience, it is still 0/10 to next level. It states in the manual that "Officers who have shown favorable results in their current rank may become eligible for promotion to the next rank" Is this based on the experience level or something else?
Thanks Daryl

They are promoted if they had a battle with lot opponent casualties. Their experience has nothing to do with it. But usually, if they had a successful battle, their experience will rise as well.

Few generals are set to auto promote on set date - for CSA side Jackson, Longstreet, Holmes, G.W. Smith and few others on Jan 62.
USA has few auto promotions as well.

Strategic tip:

If you are looking to promote a general, the easiest way is to form amphibious division which will take CSA coastal forts. They are relativly lightly defended, and capturing fort guns seem to bring some victory points - earning the commanding general a promotion.
