Age of Wonders comparison?

After many years, I have just returned to Age of Wonders:shadow worlds just to remind me how it was (it was and is pretty good!). How would this game compare to AOW:SW with respect to tactics AI and so on? One disadvantage of the latter is that the AI is generally very passive )most AI units will not move unless attacked).

Forum discussions mostly compare this game with Fantasy General. I have played that, although I remember little about it. I do have Panzer Korps, but when I played it I found that the magic of Panzer General had worn out, probably due to the scripted and relatively static repetitive battles.

So anyway how would this game compare to AOW?

A direct comparison is difficult, because the tactical battles are somewhat different (for example: towns/cities/castles are hexes on the map, instead of buildings with a wall around them) and elemental spells don't have specific elemental effects (for example: an earth spell gives a bonus to defense, it doesn't have a specific "earth" effect, so in that sense it's more similar to FG where there's just generic magic damage and magic resistance).

The tactical engine is more similar to FG than to AoW or HoM&M.
