I noticed that a lot of people here read Red Storm Rising. This was my first techno thriller and it introduced me to this kind of books.

After RSR, my favourites techno thriller books are:

Cauldron
Red Phoenix
Vortex


all three written by Larry Bond.

Hunt for Red October is within the best five (IMHO).

I would suggest also the books written by General Sir John Hackett.


And you guys, what can tell me about your favourite books?

The War That Never Was: A Novel

In some ways, this is better than Red Storm Rising.

Loved "the war that never was". It expanded the war into other theaters like the Med and the caucuses.

I'm looking for it on kindle or ebook but didn't found. I have to order it.

Salty as heck and the ultimate reading of a What-If between Russian and US CVs. Tillman is a former Chief Editor at Tailhook Magazine - this man knows naval aviation.

I bought Red Phoenix on Kobo just now.

When talking about World War III novels, I can also recommend "Red Army" by Ralph Peters. Describes a Warsaw Pact invasion of Western Germany, but from the Soviet perspective.

Team Yankee- Harold Coyle

Hard part is finding them on Kindle for me. Had to order hard copy of team Yankee

A great book from the Soviet POV, with discussions after each chapter, is "Red Thrust" by Steven Zaloga. I always felt it was the most even-handed and realistic depiction of how it would go down, and I loved the short discussions after each vignette. It's completely tactical, however (at least the vignettes are), with some discussion of strategic concerns in the summaries after each chapter. Written in 89, it's obviously a little dated, but it's impressive how much he managed to get right.

I managed to snag an increasingly-rare hardback copy a few months ago, and it was a really great (and fast-moving/entertaining) read. Highly recommended if you can find it!


PS - I thought Team Yankee was a fun read, but it made the Good Guys seem a little too invincible IMHO. I never believed the Russians would just "come in stupid" to be picked off like fish in a barrel. That's a nation where everyone plays chess. It's something to keep in mind...

Yeah my copy of this is about as tattered as my copy of RSR from re-reading over the years.

Chieftains, a little like Team Yankee, but better.

Reading Torpedo: A Surface Warfare Thriller at the moment, the "duel" part of the plot is a bit ridiculous imho, but its ok.

Andy Farman´s novels look interesting, but i didnt have the time yet.

Under the Radar looks also promising.
