Am I missing something when trying to save a game. It doesn't give me an opportunity to put in a name for the file.

Am I missing something when trying to save a game. It doesn't give me an opportunity to put in a name for the file.

The File drop down menu has both Save and Save As. The former assumes that you want to overwrite the current saved game file. The latter lets you provide a new name.

Making a backup copy of those saved games immediately is my suggestion.

My suggestion is be very careful [;)] when I first became a beta tester for MWIF over a year ago I did make that mistake several times, why because I was not careful the first week reading popups. Good luck.

Making a backup copy of those saved games immediately is my suggestion.

Easy enough.

For those who are looking, these games are installed in the following location:

C:\Matrix Games\World in Flames\Scenarios

Each is stored under the scenario name, so the Barbarossa fast play is in the "Barbarossa" folder.

I simply created a separate folder called "Fast Play Games" and copied the files into it. Hopefully the program will not be confused by the extra folder.

I would suggest that Matrix make the fast play save games available as a separate download, along with a read me file explaining where to copy them if someone needs to reset a save back to its original state.

Some follow up info.

I used Windows Explorer to find the original save file and manually changed it to read only. I then started the program, loaded the file, and attempted to save over it.

As expected, the program was unable to overwrite the file. Also as expected, the program generated an error message.

What I didn't expect was an attempt by the program to send an email. The program generated on screen prompt notifying me of the attempt and asking me to approve or deny. Is this a holdover from the beta testing, or something else?

BTW, I intentionally overwrote the file later and then copied the backup file over it. Worked just fine, resetting the save back to original state. So keeping a backup does work, so long as a user is willing to do a bit of copy/paste work.

Of the 60 phases in the game, I think there are automatic saves in 50+ of them. There are also automatic saves for about half of the subphases. Subphases exist for the combat sequences, the declaration of war phase, forming Vichy France, etc. To keep track of all the details in the midst of a combat involves a lot of extra variables. Writing them out to the disk (for a saved game) and restoring them requires a lot of code and runs the risk that some things might get dropped. As I said, most of time a save can be made (and often is done so automatically if you have that flag set to ON). But in the middle of the 28 subphases of a naval combat, making saves is usually not possible. Sorry, but I had to draw the line somewhere.

You may save at anytime with one exception, when you are in the middle of a naval sea battle or an air battle, the reasons are pretty obvious, during a certain battle you could save the game and if you did not like the outcome you quit, hit game save restore and try again, now, hmmm that could be called cheating, hmmm as a beta tester I cheated many times [:D] But I was allowed to [;)]

Yes.

There are also 'automatic saves' at the start of most phases, and many of the subphases, which include the phase/subphase as part of the file name. Automatic saves have their own sub-folder, so they don't get confused with saves that you make manually.
