Have just seen recommended for 2.0 ghz will it run on my 1.4 ghz?

Calculating supply when you have many units will take more time, I believe. I don't think the game will not run on lower speeds - but it might become a nuisance waiting for the supply calculations.
The engine is using multiple cores when your CPU has them, so if you upgrade you might want to upgrade to a multi-core CPU.

I'm running on a 1.3 ghz machine. Slightly slow thinking but not enough to be annoying. My machine also has a low-end graphics chip and refresh is a little slow also; tends occasionally to not refresh properly. Not a bug. Just a slow processor and marginal graphics chip I think. Must upgrade...must upgrade...must upgrade [:)].

I bit the bullet and upgraded to a 2.9 ghz machine. It makes a big difference.
