I decided to buy this game, but now when I start it get the message in the title: "Only one period is permitted in this filename."

The game is installed on a network drive (W) to W:\\Matrix Games\World in Flames, which works fine for other games. The game seems to start though, even though I get this error message several times before it does so.

Also, when I try to log into the server, I get the same message about one period, and then when it verifies the SN I get a message "Error = 1. Insufficient data (e.g., login incomplete." although it never asks me for a user name or password...

I'd recommend just giving a local installation a try, and/or put the the installer on your network. You can delete the videos afterward if you are desperate for room.

Can you show us the full path and file name?

I have a check in the program for only one period for saving and restoring games because multiple periods makes determining the file name extension difficult. But I can change that code if I know the details about the path + file name. I like to work from real-life examples when making changes. That way I can have more confidence that I have actually solved the problem, rather than merely think I have.

Thanks; I decided to get it when I decided to ship it to my parents in the US. The precious books will be there for awhile I guess.

Anyway, I installed to a NAS network drive so I can play on both my TV in the living room and the computer in my office. I installed from the network drive.

The full path is W:\Matrix Games\World in Flames\MWIF.exe

Although now that I think about it the W is just a mapped drive, and the NAS uses an IP address on the network so it is probably counting the periods in that part of the path, like this:
192.168.1.25:\Matrix Games\World in Flames\MWIF.exe

Does the game allow you to specify a save game location? If so it might be easier to install the program on both computers and just save the games to the network drive? I dont understand what you mean by put the installer on the network?

I think I've fixed both problems mentioned in my initial post: the problems arose when I started the game using the autorun.exe shortcut set up by the installer. When I start the game using the MWIF.exe file, everything seems to work. The path in my post above is incorrect.

Did you try executing Autorun.exe itself, not the shortcut? I've some trouble with various programs not happy about running as shortcuts.

The Autorun.exe brings up the Matrix opening screen, which gives you direct access to a lot of important stuff (e.g., updates). So you will want to use Autorun.exe. MWIF.exe runs the game itself, but not the other stuff.

If that path does have an IP address in it and you do need to run the Autorun.exe after all, you might be able to get around the path issue by defining a host file that will give the IP address an alias.

I've been getting the same error when I was saving my games in dropbox. (Wanting to easily play the same game from multiple computers.)

As soon as I stopped saving it in dropbox the errors disappeared.

What does the full path name look like for the dropbox? I might be able to enable that capability by changing a couple lines of code. But I need real world examples for analysis so I can devised a solution.

Haven't tried running the autorun file directly, but actually that file starts fine; there was only a problem if I then tried to start the game from that form. I'll keep running from autorun until I've finished watching the video tutorials, after that don't think I'll need it and will run directly from MWIF.exe.

Yeah, that sounds like it will work.

You may need Autorun to check for updates. But if I remember correctly, you know how to get Matrix updates already - so that may be unnecessary too.

It looks like I can ignore all periods before a colon (:). That's easy to do. I'll just count the ones after the colon to make sure there is only 1 (for the file name extension).

The TV must be supported by a PC right? Another fix is to install on both. You can only be one place or the other.

I would have no problem installing on both, but I want any saved games to be accessible from both computers. Not sure about this game, but some other games don't allow players to select where save game files are stored.

That is a good point. But I think you could just put saved games on the NAS in an appropriately named folder after doing a "Save As" and navigating there. Edit - no help with this idea on the Autosaves though [:)]

Another thought is to Map the NAS drive on both computers. I think that would get rid of the extra periods.

Yeah, I've mapped the drive on both computers, but sometimes I see drive "W" and sometimes I see the IP address. I have Windows 7, networking on Windows can drive me crazy...

I'll fix the check for extra periods with the next update. If you have a work-around, you should use it until then.
