How close to SMAC

One of the things I loved about playing SMAC was the dissociation between the factions. I don't recall if it was the initial separation between them or subsequent influences (in, for example, the tech tree) which allowed significant differences in behavior. Playing Civ on the other hand does not show this kind of difference between the different civs. It is all kind of vanilla and everybody is and acts the same(although Civ remains the best strategy game on the planet.)Does Pandora: First contact at all emulate SMAC in this regard?

Pandora is being called the spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri by a number of journalists but is its own game. It is clearly inspired by SMAC but takes its own direction and has distinct difference. I think anyone who liked SMAC will certainly enjoy Pandora. Also Pandora is very much an evolving game. The team are committed to making substantial changes as they go to really keep things fresh and players engaged. They are in this for the long haul!

I would say close enough and emulates some of the core values that made SMAC great in this specific new world sci fi 4x genre.
So I look forward to supporting the Pandora project. More random events, more flavourful story and themes that fit within a sandbox environment and more systems that enhance the core. More soul.

Very impressed so far. Better than expected production values, easy to pick up the basics, and a sensible price.
Certainly has that SMAC feel, without being in any way a clone.

I'd love to see something along the lines of a fresh take on social engineering and secret projects. I know small movies or cut scenes probably won't happen but they offer what feels like a reward for accomplishing various events.
Enjoying the game quite a bit.
