For a bit of nostalgia, take a look at Brian Reynold's inteview when SMAC was released and his development diaries - from 1998!

Edit: Apart from the main link I've provided, the other links on the page seem to be dead unfortunately. The internet was steam-driven then, so I guess someone stopped shovelling coal into the boilers on those servers.
