When a unit receives a battle award, how can you view what impact that award has on the units stats?
I can hover the cursor over a hero picture in the unit details battle history to at least see what the assigned hero adds (although that is a pain, would be nice if that showed up when displaying all stats for that unit).
Example: I have a unit with both Iron Cross 1st Class and Knight's Cross awards; Does these add any value to the units stats or are they just an image in the battle history?

I don't think the medals add anything as far as combat or morale bonuses. Only the heroes.

That is correct.

However, medals teel you that your unit is eligible to receive a hereo.

Thank you for the clarification, I was wondering why I should care when a unit received a medal.
