Check out RUA11 and RUA13. The SPA battalion and its batteries for a 1985+ Tank Regiment have "MechInf" roles instead of "Sparty".

I was wondering why they just charge forwards in the scenario I tinker with, instead of, well, acting like artillery.

Capn Darwin, would your fix for this also cover any arty/sparty unit that is selected as part of a higher formation (Bn/Regt). I've noticed that if a arty/sparty unit is selected as part of a higher formation it acts like the higher formation, whereas if you select a arty/sparty unit then add it to a higher formation it acts like arty/sparty.

Can you give me some more detail? Are you talking if you add them in the scen edit and then play? The data files won't control what you are saying is happening. That would be an error of some type in the parsing code. This may be another factor in MR's odd arty behavior.

It might be that there is one formation that doesn't provide a SPARTY HQ it just adds the SPARTY directly to the higher HQ ORBAT, i'll go through the Russian user files to see which one it is later today

Feel free to ignore me, I've seen ORBATs where there is no HQ for SPARTY but cannot remember where I saw it, it might be in scenarios rather than core files

My guess would be the arty was off map and off map arty don't need a HQ to function. It is assumed to be attached to a different formation than what is in the game.

It is still a potential problem that we need to investigate and make sure the correct "assignments" are made to unit types.

Knew I wasn't losing my mind any more than normal. Found the missing Arty HQ, its in the pre-1984 MRR (all 3 variations) - see screenie below:

Date is set at 02/06/1980, using the master data file (not the user data file)

Test formation is MRR (MRD-BMP)
Test2 formation is MRR (MRD-BTR)
MRR (TD) is also the same but not visible on the screenie.

I'm confused. Where is the Arty HQ in these formations? Looks Like I should update them for one. That I can do.

No idea where the HQ is, checking the user data file it shows RU197, INF-HQ & RECCE but they don't seem to appear when you select the formation. I suspect that as the HQ isn't appearing that they are taking their lead from the next HQ up (in this case the RHQ)

I'll see if I can get this fixed for the 2.03 update.
