Installing the series seperately

Hi folks,

I have all four of the series - Distant Worlds plus Shakturi, Legends and Shadows.

My question is ... if I install one after the other, will I then be able to play just vanilla Distant Worlds (without the expansions)? Will I be able to elect to play the base game with just the Shakturi expansion? And so on with the other two?

Or will I have no choice but to play with all three expansions enabled? Ideally, I would like to experience the development of the series incrementally. Of course I could just install them when I am ready to play with the expansions, but I wondered if I could get away with getting the installs out of the way but discriminate which versions I play.

Install first the Original
Then install Shakturi, then Legends, then Shadows
After that patch Shadows.
I would like to experience the development of the series incrementally.
Then you should just install the original game, and play a few games with it.
The expansions add a few new game mechanics and change the research tree a bit. That don't change the gameplay at all but you will notice the difference.
