Proper Recoinnaissance

This thread comes from something I read on another Thread:

"Taking into account that most turns are around 20-35 min long, a longer playing time gives enough time to conduct proper reconnaissance, sometimes I feel that I am too pressed to attack". (by Panta)

When attacking I always try to make reconnaissance, moving cautiously (deliberate moves) in sight of the enemy, but it always goes the wrong way: my recon troops are easily shot down by enemy units in a very short time.
It seems recon troop do not get any camouflage or stealth bonus when approaching enemy. They are spotted and hit far too easily.
Moreover, IMHO they do not react smartly enough, so that they take fire in place instead of fleeing asap.
May be I'm wrong and I'm simply misusing those units, so any advice on recon tactics is welcome.

In most games I have played, except in man-operated units in simulators like Steel Beasts, of course, reconnaissance is carried out by "recon by dying", the recon units are eliminated in a swift and easy way. I guess that the AI in FPC increases their survival a lot, though not enough in some circumstances. Anyway, using them judiciously and taking profit of natural coverage, they are very useful in the game. They do not engage too easy, but can be ambushed, of course. Recon and counter-recon is an essential part of battle. That's why I think that you need time, maybe starting recon before or at sunrise, hours before the main forces move to engage.
