patches and saved games

Are new patches compatible with saved games. Or do we need to start a new game with each new patch?
My partner and I just downloaded the newest patch and tried playing an in progress game.
My partner tried to do a port strike and the game froze on us.
I didn't do a save game but we could probably repeat if necessary.
