I've watched it this year and I can say that it has a very strong propagandist touch. Some might like the series, but as far as I am concerned, it's not my kind of movie. For example, in the beginning they are trying to show us how strong friendships were between Germans and Jews at the common people level. It's cheesy, really.
I believe that instead of throwing money down the toilet trying to convince us for the countless time how bad the Nazi regime was and so on (most of us already know that, folks!), the producers should have been done a lot better if they would have donated the money spent for making the movie to some organization helping children in an African country.

Weird. Is that the new Merkel's Germany? New role (now no one talks about the EU -it has vanished, apparently- but about what Merkel aka Germany says) = *new* history needs to be taught? [;)]

I don't think the one in bold is an appropriate interpretation, but whatever. Concerning your statement, couldn't be more wrong. Germany's treatment of the past borders on an inferiority complex. On every appropriate occasion the German mass public is reminded of the horrors committed by the national socialist. Compared to Japan for example, the difference is quite stark. If the Japanese premier Abe for example would be a German, he would be branded as a neo-fascist, perhaps with quite a number of court appearances for "Volksverhetzung" (incitement of the people).

I don't agree that it should be propagandist at all. Somewhat cheesy yes, but then all movies or TV-series are to some extent. I think it is good that they show the plight of the Jews, and the best way to get it in is to have a jewish character in the script.

I think it is one of the best WW2 renderings in a German movie or TV series. Well worth seeing IMHO. Not only combat at the front, but hospitals and the home front as well. Of course there is the stereotyped egoistic Nazi bigwig etc, but what do you expect?

SigUp, it's precisely because I perfectly know "Germany's treatment of the past borders on an inferiority complex" that this anecdote strikes me [;)] [Japan is on the antipodes, oh well, blame McArthur for not doing his job; this I am well aware too]

Well, it's been this way until I see someone is trying to sell the *strong friendship* thing.

What's common people? Working class, I guess. Yes, most of them voted KPD instead of Nazi. Per definition a genuine communist cannot be anti-semitic or racist for that matter. This I knew, nothing new.

I doubt the film makers are thinking about the old rotte KPD voters from the 30s [:D]

So new role = new history?

Well, the protagonists of the film were middle class people. [:D]

Agreed, the friendship with the Jew thing is partly out of the design of the entire series. If you want to have protagonists who are friends who grew up with each other and in addition want to include a Jewish character, then it's not really surprising that they have a good relationship.
