Generic Gun Director (LLTV) seems to be some kind of magical sensor. From a the middle of the island Gotland in the Baltic sea, a CV9040 gunner is able to detect and classify a russian bogey at a range of 53nm.

I did the calculation and the Bogey is well above the horizon (disregarding any terrain obstacles) for the Mech Inf Plt, but its almost 100km away. If the effects of atmospheric refraction is inrapporterad as it should, then I would suggest that you rough up the optical sensors a bit when you start working on the land combat.

Was it the first detection of this aircraft?

No it wasn't, it updated the bogey from unknown to fighter.

I have also had ships providing type for aircraft's (SU-27) from roughly 100nm using only imaging, at night.
