I'm very new, so I apologize if this is a silly question.

I don't fully understand the assigning of ship roles vs what components you put on them.

I'm curious if you can design a cruiser with some scanners and use it as an explorer ship. Is that possible, and if so, will it retain the right-click "explore" missions?

Any ship with a resource scanner can explore a planet as far as I'm aware, although the explore command is only available to ships classified in the "Exploration Ship" role. Either way, if you want your combat ships to scan planets for resources as you encounter them running around killing stuff, then just throw the scanner on one of your combat ship designs. If you want a stronger explorer vessel, then just make one. There is no limits on the exploration ship role, other than it must have a resource scanner.
