New Scenario
The Straits of Tiran are a strategic and narrow passage that Israel used to gain entrance into the Gulf of Aqaba and to the port of Eilat in southern Israel. Historically, after the Yom Kippur war in October of 1973, hostilities begin to wind down prior to the Camp David Accords in 1979 and not much military action was seen once Israel began to pull out of Sinai Peninsula.
This fictitious scenario takes Egypt as the aggressor against Israel in January 1978. Two merchant ships under Israeli gunboat escort are traversing the Red Sea towards the strait and are being constantly harassed by Egyptian aircraft. Israeli gunboats, as well armed for naval combat as they are, cannot protect the merchant vessels alone from the five wings at the Egyptian air base. Israel must depend on her own air wing at Eilat to protect the fleet from the Egyptian air force, navy as well as ground units on the two small islands within the straits.
