Capital Ships

I have my advisors automatically recommending ships to be built. I also have research on automatic. I am well into the game and no capital ships yet. Is this typical? Is there research necessary to be completed before the advisors will automatically design a capital ship. Under ship design, it says that no design is available for capital ships. Thoughts?

As your playing it on autopilot you will have to wait to see if they turn up.

If on manual then go into research and click on the Energy tab, second row from bottom is the construction advances, see what that level that has got the current ship size to then go into the design screen and find out what the latest size of Capital Ship is, chances are that you have not researched the correct level of construction tech to get the capital ship size, could also be weapons etc so might be worth checking the current design of Capital ship and seeing what your missing regards tech and then take the autopilot off and manually assign the research projects needed to get the Capital design you want.

Of course you could just manually design your own capital ship within current tech limits ...

And don't forget at DW a capital ship is just a role how the AI handle ships, not a special ship size.

With the exception of the "Largest Capital Ship Size" which pretty much requires you to have one of the Planet Destroyers.

Or a Resupply Ship. I tend to use them as my Flagships.

Hmmm? Resupply counts as a Cap ship? Never noticed that, always thought they were a separate category...

I thought the same thing, they are a separate design class, nothing to do with the capital design at all. They also have nothing to do with the construction size tech other than you need the first few levels of the construction tech to unlock the Shipyard, once that is researched the resupply ship is available and IIRC has the same size limits as a Constructor design class.

Yes Resupply ships arn't military ships at the first role, but you can use them as real devesting ships, since they can 3 times bigger then your normal ships.

And they got the unique ability to refuel themself during fight/flight with fuel gas from the cargo, not to forget to harvest new fuel from local sources.

Yeah, according to game rules Resupply Ships aren't supposed to be truly "Military" ships.

But that don't stop you from loading them full of Guns using all the extra space. Or Fighter bays, as I tend to do. My Resupply Ships always ride the very max size available, have the very minimum percentage of fuel cells, cargo bays, and gas extractors to fulfill their role, and then I cram the rest of that space full of guns, fighters, shields, more guns, armor, and more guns (generally torpedoes and missiles).

I also custom design every Resupply Ship to give an even bigger feeling of "This is my Flagship".

Yeah for the purpose of a pocket battleship they are fine. The comment above was in reference to the Victory condition dealing with the largest Capital Ship, actual Capital Ship.
