NATO Symbol Help

Hi guys,

I'm designing a board game, and I was just wondering what the NATO symbol for an insurgent/guerrilla would be.

In theory I could use an infantry symbol, but that has a tendency to represent organised infantry, not a rag-tag insurgent unit.

I've seen in some games they use this symbol for Guerrilla units: http://s316.photobucket.com/user/UN-Spa ... 6.jpg.html

However I can't find any official documents stating that this is actually the case.

anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

My shaky memory seems to recollect something using an "I" for "Irregular".  Can't remember if it was something game specific or not.

here's what we used for Next Wars I: Orange Crush

For US symbology (which is about a 95% overlap w/ NATO) you want MIL STD 2525B

Cheers for the responses.

I like the Commando symbol. I think that might be more appropriate for my GRU Spetsnaz than the standard [SOF] nato symbol.

As for the insurgents, I may have to design something myself in that case. Any more suggestions are welcome!

How about an uneven, lopsided infantry symbol denoting an "irregular/insurgent"?

I have no idea on how the NATO symbol for insurgent or guerrilla looks like.

But I do like how the partisan counter looks like in MWIF so I can't resist showing it.

There's no official NATO symbol for guerrilla units so it's up to you....anyway, you can find a quite complete list on wikipedia.

There is, they take the same form as standard hostile infantry/recce/supply/motorised infantry. This is explicitly shown in the App6 documents.

There are also symbols for insurgent activity sans identified bodies of soldiery ~ booby traps, ambush sites, artillery firing positions (or impacts) etc.

In traditional war games (read that as board war games) empty white boxes have been used, or a rectangle with a P or I have been used.

I settled for a similar take on the 'P' for partisan. Instead I wanted to focus on the fact that these are Mujahedeen units, and thus the 'M' for Mujahedeen, combined with the infantry cross.

There is also a Soviet Mechanised Infantry unit present.

Thanks for the help guys.
