This is a very interesting song released in 1973. This video includes the song's lyrics. It's a rare thing for a pop song to be written about military history, so here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcFs8vKtFgQ

A couple good tunes there from a very prolific collection of story/songs from Al. Thanks guys.

If I may insert a few more historic song/stories myself.

Sink The Bismarck - Johnny Horton

Johnny Horton - The Battle of New Orleans

The Ghost of General Lee - Waylon Jennings

Someone did a "combat mission Barbarossa to Berlin" video with this song in the background - it was very well done and hilarious. The link on the CM forum is dead though, I wish i had it.

I can't find them but I thought the Iron Butterfly did some songs on battles. Sorrow for the memory lapse.

But you have to listen to the entire side version of the Iron Butterfly classic.

Thank you so much for this youtube link.[8D] I remember being about 20 years old and listening to this song on FM radio while I just happened to be playing a game by the old AH called The Russian Campaign (solataire likely). I never heard that song again, and other than knowing it was an Al Stewart song, never found it and eventually forgot all about it. This is awesome to find so many (many) years later! Thank you!

My mistake it was IRON MAIDEN. did one called the trooper.

You'll take my life but I'll take yours too
You'll fire your musket but I'll run you through
So when you're waiting for the next attack
You'd better stand there's no turning back

The bugle sounds as the charge begins
But on this battlefield no one wins
The smell of acrid smoke and horses breath
As you plunge into a certain death

The horse he sweats with fear we break to run
The mighty roar of the Russian guns
And as we race towards the human wall
The screams of pain as my comrades fall

We hurdle bodies that lay on the ground
And as the Russians fire another round
We get so near yet so far away
We won't live to fight another day

We get so close near enough to fight
When a Russian gets me in his sights
He pulls the trigger and I feel the blow
A burst of rounds takes my horse below

And as I lay there gazing at the sky
My body's numb and my throat is dry
And as I lay forgotten and alone
Without a tear I draw my parting groan

I was never into Metal much but this was an awesome song.

Motorhead did a good one called "1916".
Off their album 1916.

Get past the Motorhead thing (Lenny is one of my favs, personally), and give it a listen. Very good.
