Against my better judgement I've decided to do two stupid things: 1. Take on another CG PBEM and 2. Put together an AAR on it.

This game will match me up with SqzMyLemon. He will play the role of the Allied Dogs (AD). He has granted me the benefit of scenario 2 and some reasonable house rules (available upon request). We don't have a ton of HRs, just a handful to smooth over some of the more cumbersome aspects of gameplay that we both find distasteful.

This first post is an introduction to the AAR, such as it will be. I particularly wanted to welcome any new or wannabe JFBs. Please post any questions you have. I swear that I'll be patient. I enjoy teaching (I have done it in real life) and learning from students too.

Yeah, the air groups at Pearl are something that I can't argue. It would have been sweet to bash up a bunch of his P40s, Catalinas and the like, no question. Both from a 'damaging his air groups' and probable VPs, the clear winner is a PH attack.

But there are variables in a PH attack too. If we went with a historical perspective, the PH attack was largely inconsequential in the overall thrust and flow of the Pacific war. Huge efforts were expended by the Americans to get the Oklahoma, Nevada, California and West Virginia back in order. Sure, they got to help get a coup de grace against Kirishima in the Surigao straits, but was their presence that important to the war effort?

A historical December 8 turn in this game starts with Oklahoma and Arizona gone, right? So that's how this game would reflect history. Other PH attacks have met with success, sinking 4-5 BBs. Other PH attacks have met with inexplicable inefficiency as well-we've both seen AARs where no BBs were sunk.

Then there's the risk to KBs airgroups. Sure, my A6M2 aces can shoot up some Catalinas on Hawaii. I can also lose 29 of 'em by attacking that port AAA. Lose 29 highly trained pilots on day 1? I like the idea of the soft target (Manila) much more.

Lastly, the war is long. There's still plenty of time for him to lose those old BBs to torpedo attack on the high seas. A lucky submarine intercept can do as much damage as a full-throated KB attack on the port, with considerably less risk.

Plus, the presence of KB in the Philippines will absolutely implode Allied defenses there. Far too many Japanese players lose sight of the MAIN goal of their conquest-securing resources of the DEI. Other than the opportunity to kill Allied troops for VPs, I want to capture as much of the DEI as fast and efficiently as possible. Crushing nascent Allied opposition and putting his naval forces to rout across the DEI helps to secure these efforts.

I know you don't have much regard for the PH BB's, but when he starts taking back territory they will hurt you. They will take hits that would normally slaughter the APA's in his amphib invasion forces, they will be available for "atomic" bombardments, and can be used against raiders with long range , high value convoys. By and large , ALL ,of your forces in the PI can be best described as "obsolete". While it's gratifying to rack up low numbers of AKL's, gunboats and submarines that are generally no threat to you till late 1943 (by that time , you'll have much more capable new construction anyway) you really haven't hurt the allies that much by destroying the PI. Frankly , the ships I've missed the most in the three times you've used this gambit against me have been the "Bird" class AM's (which I always convert to AVP's).

By hitting PH you may damage his fuel, docks and infrastructure , and you may get the old BB's, but you'll hit modern DD's , CL's and support ships. And you'll tie up his dry docks for months with damaged ships , as well as delaying his updating them (by making him reluctant to send them to the west coast , either from fear of running cripples into the KB , or just from unrepaired battle damage.

And he'll be reluctant to send reinforcements and supply convoys to PH for weeks , fearful that the KB is waiting around to massacre them. And of course the aforementioned air frames question. Maul PH and it will be months till he has enough air frames to fill out a single squadron of fighters completely to facilitate faster training.

The air groups at Pearl 'may' hurt you if AD plays his cards right.

Yeah, the air groups at Pearl are something that I can't argue. It would have been sweet to bash up a bunch of his P40s, Catalinas and the like, no question. Both from a 'damaging his air groups' and probable VPs, the clear winner is a PH attack.

But there are variables in a PH attack too. If we went with a historical perspective, the PH attack was largely inconsequential in the overall thrust and flow of the Pacific war. Huge efforts were expended by the Americans to get the Oklahoma, Nevada, California and West Virginia back in order. Sure, they got to help get a coup de grace against Kirishima in the Surigao straits, but was their presence that important to the war effort?

A historical December 8 turn in this game starts with Oklahoma and Arizona gone, right? So that's how this game would reflect history. Other PH attacks have met with success, sinking 4-5 BBs. Other PH attacks have met with inexplicable inefficiency as well-we've both seen AARs where no BBs were sunk.

Then there's the risk to KBs airgroups. Sure, my A6M2 aces can shoot up some Catalinas on Hawaii. I can also lose 29 of 'em by attacking that port AAA. Lose 29 highly trained pilots on day 1? I like the idea of the soft target (Manila) much more.

Lastly, the war is long. There's still plenty of time for him to lose those old BBs to torpedo attack on the high seas. A lucky submarine intercept can do as much damage as a full-throated KB attack on the port, with considerably less risk.

Plus, the presence of KB in the Philippines will absolutely implode Allied defenses there. Far too many Japanese players lose sight of the MAIN goal of their conquest-securing resources of the DEI. Other than the opportunity to kill Allied troops for VPs, I want to capture as much of the DEI as fast and efficiently as possible. Crushing nascent Allied opposition and putting his naval forces to rout across the DEI helps to secure these efforts.

I know you don't have much regard for the PH BB's, but when he starts taking back territory they will hurt you. They will take hits that would normally slaughter the APA's in his amphib invasion forces, they will be available for "atomic" bombardments, and can be used against raiders with long range , high value convoys. By and large , ALL ,of your forces in the PI can be best described as "obsolete". I know we have a fundamentally different point of view about the value of the Pearl Harbor strike versus having KB on hand for early landings in and around the PI. Vive la difference! [:)]

I *do* respect the old BBs, once they are refit and upgraded. It will be well into 1943 until he can do harm against me with them, IMO. Hopefully, I can nick one of two of 'em before then.

Ayup. It's my best shot at "winning" the game. If I can Auto-vic him, that's the game engine's objective way of telling me that I'm doing something right.

As of turn 1 in China, he's falling back. That could be a problem for my most opportunistic point source in 1942. [:(]

Since you are playing Scenario 2, where are you planning on going with those extra troops once the SRA/DEI is conquered?? Inquiring minds want to know!! [;)]

Not entirely certain, ny59giants. I'm more prone to using them to an "early Java" landing than casting them upon the Indian subcontinent trying to capture that. I think that the entirety of Australia is probably bit too much to bite off too.

Uses under consideration:

1. Early Java.
2. NE Australia.
3. Fiji / Suva, New Caledonia / Noumea, Pago Pago
4. Ceylon.
5. NE India to encircle forward defenses against Burma.

Port Moresby is a priority. I want that in hand before February. The 4th ID is moving to Tokyo to board an amphibious TF for transport down there. KB (- Kaga) will support the landing.
