Windows 8.1

Hello Everyone,
I'm a pensioner who has just bought a Windows 8.1 64 bit PC. I won't bore you with details but we aren't getting on very well. Lots of old favourites won't run despite assurances from Microsoft to the contrary.
I have this wonderful new machine hooked up to a Sony TV running at 1920 x 1080 resolution. The processor is an AMD 3.8 GHz with 8GB of memory. The graphics card is a Sapphire Radeon R9 270X with 2048MB of memory.
I've done a search through the forum for 'Windows 8.1' problems and only found one. Here the enquirer was advised to tick a box in the windows features to include .Net 3.5. This I've already done.
I understand there is a 'no returns policy' and I appreciate that but equally so you can understand my reluctance to spend almost £70 on something which may have irreconcilable issues with Windows 8.1.
Please can anyone tell me if I have a sufficiently reasonable computer to run CMANO on this system and if not what I need to do to rectify that?
Thanking you in anticipation,
Kind Regards,
Cliff

Command runs flawlessly on my laptop with 8.1 and it's pretty far from a gaming machine. I don't have it hooked to a tv for a monitor though.

Im running Command with the following spec Win 8.1 - Core 2 Quad 2.8 - 8GB Ram - Radeon HD 5 series and this runs fine, although if the unit count is high i do get some slow down.
Looking at your spec you would not have a problem running command, hope this helps

I'm running 8.1 and have run and updated the game through about five updates without a problem. Build 490 was a real problem, but due to some advice found here, I realized that it had to do with Windows Media Player not being installed in Win8.1 by default. After installing WM, my install of CMANO works like a champ, even when I'm pushing it WAYYY past what it's typically supposed to do.
Buy the ticket. Take the ride.

why would windows media player have anything to do with how command runs?

When programming you generally try to avoid duplicating work you can use from another source. For example, Joint Command uses Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll even though JC is written in c sharp, I only use 1 tiny little bit of the .dll.
Windows media player comes with a pile of useful .dlls. If I had to guess it might have something to do with the music or sound playback; not quite sure what else it might do heh.

That's curious...8.1 on both my laptop and desktop has windows media player, but I didn't install it. At least not that I can remember installing myself.

If you have problems running Command under Win8.1, please install Windows Media Player [8D]

Had no issues with Command myself on Windows 8.1, I have had some issues with other things although I'd say they're Windows 8/8.1 not specific to 8.1

Dear All,
Thanks for the replies. Bought the sim this morning and working my way through the first tutorial. It has locked up twice, just slowed to a halt. So not sure what the problem might be. However, I see that Windows Media Player is advisable to install as well. Any particular version recommended please?
Despite the initial problem its still very captivating.
Kind Regards,
Cliff

Great [8D]
Please make sure you upgrade to 1.02 and then grab Build 490 which is the very latest version of the sim [:D]

Media Player already installed so that has that covered.
Ran up the sim this morning and noted I have 1.02 build 480. Went to the download pages and found a 1.02 update dated Dec 2013 so downloaded that (in the hope that would carry not only the 1.02 update but the build 490 as well). Ran the update and it informed me I already had the 1.02 updated installed and to continue might cause problems with my serial number.
Does this mean the build updates are located somewhere else? If this is the case please can you put me on the right path? [&o]
Kind Regards,
Cliff

Try looking in the forum near the top. The in-between builds have their own thread.

Ah! Hidden in plain sight! That old trick. [:(]
Some days I really do take far too many stupid pills.
Thank you for that. I'm running the sim for the third time and so far no hitches or lock ups.
I've only run the first tutorial so far but it's so interesting I don't feel the need to have a look at the others yet. My book at bedtime is going to be the manual for the next few nights. You really have built a great sim here. Thank you.
Kind regards,
Cliff

I hear ya, I played the Air Tutorial a good 15-20 times when I first got the game. Best way to learn it all!

Build a few scenarios....constantly asking "oh can it do this" and then testing it teaches you a lot about how the mission editor works.

Dear All,
Very many thanks for all the help and encouragement.
I've got a few questions bubbling away in my head but I need to do some searches through the forum first.
Kind Regards,
Cliff

Have a look through some of Baloogan's (he replied above) videos, also.
