Is the PBEM in the game what is sometimes now called classic PBEM(swap files using email), or does it use a server of some type?

This title does not contain PBEM++ (the server-based PBEM) - it's the classic PBEM system where you mail the files yourself.

Putting the saved game files in Dropbox, or some other cloud storage service works very well too.
