This is the first scenario I am truly stuck on - cannot get anywhere with this one. Any help would be appreciated.

Nobody seems to have any tips for you, so I just replayed it to refresh my memory. Played on Hard, took the last couple vic hexes on the last turn in a bit of a nailbiter.
So, yeah, those German mortars are brutal. Concentrate everything you can on them. You have artillery, some air attacks at random times, and eventually your own mortar to hit them with, and the MG can reach the closer one. Additionally, keep your units spread out, big fat stacks are just waiting to get mortared.
I started with an attack across the whole front. I got all three airstrikes very early, which used up all my good luck. My northern units got massacred and I changed tactics to push hard on the south to try and roll up the German line from the end. Eventually the only guy left in the north was Yakov, hiding in a crater and directing artillery.
I eventually killed that team MG by hitting it with my own mortar followed up with my own team MG. This apparently irritated Wurtz who then decided to lead a counterattack into the giant hole in my forces but fortunately he was repulsed.
The two German mortars survived most of the game, and they killed a ton of my troops. I was trying to keep my guys spread out but every time I would collect a few shaken ones and move a leader or the nurse to go rally them one of the the damn things would hit the whole stack.
On the plus side, with all the fire I was taking, I churned through about six heroes - every time one would appear near the front, I would charge him forward as a suicidal melee guy to try and get those mortars and MGs.
It was a bloody mess - in the end I lost 18 squads while killing about 25 or so, and I initiated 24 melees which I think might be a new record for me. But it was a victory, that's all that matters. [:'(]
Hopefully some of that is helpful!

Dang! Nice recap and it sounds like Heroes does a pretty good job of capturing the intense combat and casualties that occurred at Stalingrad.
