Hello
I recently purchased this awesome game and am learning the tactics.
Is there a way to clear obstacles and minefields other than by moving units into them and suffering the direct and indirect consequences? Can they be reduced by artillery fire for example? Are there units that clear these awful obstructions more quickly than others?

Not yet. Combat engineer activities are currently abstracted.
Good Hunting.

Real world, you don't breach a minefield with fires (indirect nor direct). It takes too much ammo and the possibility that not all mines get neutralized is too great. And arty won't fill in a ditch.
Minefields, ditches, and fences are best when covered by direct and indirect fire. At the game scale of 500 meters per hex, you gotta enter the hex to breach. It takes time to move up a MICLIC or infantry platoon to breach a belt of mines. It takes time to move up the AVLB to bridge a ditch. A breach through a minefield might not even involve destroying mines. It might only be marking the safe path between them.
A crew might spot a surface laid minefield, if they were laid hasty (i.e. not camoflaged) and not in deep vegetation. Dealing with obstacles and mines is hazardous. That's why defenders use them.
Mad Russian: Does the AI do a SOSR (Suppress, Obscure, Secure, Reduce) drill? Is there a movement or combat penalty when crossing a breached obstacle/minefield?
