Where do 'allied forces' start in the 'Grand' campaign Start?

Just wondering where the allies start in the main 'Italian Campaign'. Do they start on the Italian mainland or do you need to invade [:D]...?
They start in Messina. To get to the mainland they can either cross the straits or make amphibious landings at beaches along the coast. The latter costs sea invasion points which are purchased with supply and fuel points.
