LnL impact

I think this game series is dying since the Lock n Load release. Especially seeing the activity on that forum versus here.

A shame really, but that is the marketplace in action [:(]

CoH is not dying. LnL is the new kid on the block.

What will kill any game system is the absence of the games designers/developers on the forums. Answering questions and keeping the forums active helps keep the game fresh in everyone's mind.

Case in point - I've been trying to get an answer on the CoH Mods & Scenarios forum if we are getting additional scripting / editing documentation. What we have now is inadequate - I cannot get an answer - very frustrating.

I have been impressed with the LnL developer's presence and his responses to players' quotes from the LnL rulebook where the computer version has the rules wrong. His response to that is always - 'right, I'll get it fixed'.

I've also noticed the LnL's developers "hands on" attention to the forums.

I own all the board games for both CoH & LnL. While I enjoy both systems, my preference is CoH. Conversely, I own all the CoH pc products. While I enjoy them, I find the lack of editing and scripting documentation frustrating. I may pull the trigger and purchase the LnL pc game. Is the documentation on editing LnL comprehensive?

No I don't think it is, but check the forum. My frustration comes from the fact I also prefer the COH board game system but the design decisions and lack of development and bug fixes in the computer game seem like missed opportunities (imho).

Very good points....I like COH and I want SoS but a few scenarios in COH and Ghost crash and I can't get anything done with the editor. If this was an active forum like many others I wouldn't hesitate and I'd probably be having a great time with Storm.

If this game had the looks of LnL and more importantly Leaders rather than the CAP mechanic I'd be playing now. Leaders add so much to the narrative if a tactical wargame that it adds to the immersion which all 2D wargames need to work on..immersion through mechanics..

I hear you, but when you've accepted all that a game design offers and the forum goes quite it's indeed frustrating. I think the absence of the developers has done more damage to COH than LnL.

LNL is indeed benefitting from being new and shiny.
And being at the tactical scale I purchased it in the first week.
I like a lot of what it offers, but other things still leave me waiting on a better tactical game.
But I've only played a few times and of course did not read the manual.

The lack of leaders is what draws me to CoH. In my opinion, CoH's command and control approach is the most elegant and functional of any tactical game I play. To each his own. That's why they make 57 flavors of ice cream.

To set the record straight - the developer has responded to my request for additional scripting documentation. He will be putting the documents together.

As I said for me it's mainly for immersion reasons..

What's the performance speed of LnL on older systems? How does it compare to CoH? LnL appears to have 2D graphics, not 3D -- right?

On my 7-year-old Dell E521 (Windows 7; AMD Sempron 3400+ dual core processor, 4 GB RAM; ATI Radeon HD 3450, 256 MB?), CoH is so slow graphically as to be almost unbearable. (I've tried suggested tweaks, but not quite all of them.)

CoH is supposed to be a "simple" adaptation of a board war game. It doesn't really need 3D fanciness, IMO, to recreate a "realistic", "you are there" experience of playing an actual physical board game. 2D graphics would have worked well with this game, I think, certainly would have made it acceptably fast on older systems.

Does graphics slowness hurt CoH in the marketplace?

I only play CoH with 2D graphics. As CoH board game purist, I cannot play 3D.

CoH 2D? Obviously I'm missing something.

I also play just with 2D. I didn't feel like 3D added much.

I'm referring to using the 2D unit (chit) counters, not the 3D squad representation.

You can play on a board game style map (flat with textures) by selecting the following system preferences

Boardgame-Style Map: Yes
Show combat dice: yes (not a dice roll graphic but you see the resulting faces)
Use Chit Graphics: Yes
Show Victory Medals: No

And pick the top down camera view in game.

I hope I didn't miss understand your statement.

Boardgame-Style Map, with top-down camera view -- definitely looks better. Switching res to 1280x1024 helps. (My monitor is 1920x1080.) No speedier than before, still sluggish though. [:(]

Oh, a new discovery! Strangely (?), moving around the map by

[*]holding down the left mouse button
[*]the mouse cursor switches to a hand icon
[*]dragging the map around with the "hand"

is decidedly faster than

[*]mousing to the window edge, or
[*]using the arrow keys

I mean to say the first panning method scrolls the map around faster than the mouse-edge or arrow key methods. The display action is snappier thereby.

Okay, this is getting better and better. The game is much more playable now.[:)]
