This is for the scenario Typhoon Hell 1983 in Mods and scenarios: Command: Modern Air / Naval Operations >> Mods and Scenarios >> New Scenario for testing, USS Baltimore SC1 - Typhoon Hell 1983

I am torn about the difficulty of the scenario. Here is how to play this. If you feel I am saying too much, stop reading this post and come back after you played it. If you feel I should remove this or it needs correction, please let me know.. I want every one that chooses to play this to have fun by doing some work but definitely have some fun and success.

Catching and follow that victor.
First off as he approaches, wait until you have enough info on the Victor. First note his depth. If he is deep, go above the layer as he approaches you and let your towed array track him. After he passes go to his depth +100ft. Get into his baffles and then match his course and speed. If you lose contact at matched speed, raise your speed 3-5 knots. Run for ten minutes and match his speed again. Repeat this several times until you pick him up.

Now that you are carousing along like this with the Victor, watch his depth and yours. Watch for any turns he may make. Note if he is starting to go shallow, that may indicate he is getting ready to enter his patrol zone. Watch for Loss of contact, that means he slowed down so drop to a creep and Turn 70 deg to port or starboard. You may have to Move above the layer if you are not in his baffles. If you can't pick him up, he has stopped or is in a creep. If you do find him again and he is moving at a fast rate of speed, take up behind him again.

When he has reached his patrol zone he will drop to 5 knots and go shallow. He will start going above and below the layer. You will lose contact and may not pick him up again. He has no towed array. When he Is doing this, you are in some part of the southern patrol zone.

Break contact with the victor by stopping your sub. Let him get distance and then slowly start your move north to the bottom of the typhoons patrol zone 30 to 45 miles. Use reference markers to layout what you think would be the typhoons patrol zone. Now search in that area. Try going above and below the layer. It's not much of a layer. I can't explain it, I detected him more under the layer as I did over it. You will find him.

I've played this scenario 4 times in the last 3 days and I was never able to detect K-502 Victor, so i'm down to 2 possibilities:
1. I'm dumber than I think
2. I'm not interpreting the orders correctly

I don't want to ruin the suprise, so all I'm asking is: once you reach the "intercept area" (the area with 4 preplanned waypoints at 70.03N 35.somethingE), do you have to WAIT for K-502 or MOVE toward Kola?

I'll add a third possibility: is there any known problem in running the community scenario with the latest candidate release ?

One attempt, sneaked down to sit off Kola Bay, got onto the back of a Victor, tracking east north east, it didn't go anywhere near the the patrol zone as specified and eventually scenario finished without this Victor looking like it was near any patrol area. If I would have waited near the designated patrol zone, there would have been no way I would have detected that Victor. Not sure if there is another Victor leaving Kola Bay in this scenario, but yet to find it, if there is. :)
