An Idiot and Windows 8.1 do not mix

Hi guys,

Let me apologize in advance for asking such basic questions. I have a new Asus laptop (old computer died, sadly) running win 8.1.
I've read several other threads about widescreen issues and sluggish performance but have no idea how or where to input the various code lines that may help.
I basically would like to be able to run AE in widescreen (rather than the 2/3 screen now) and improve the clicking/scroll speeds if I can.
My screen resolution seems to be 1920 x 1080.
What changes do I need to make in the WITPAE file and where/how exactly do I make them. Sorry again to be such a doofus but any help would be greatly appreciated!

Easy mate:

-fd -skipVideo -deepColor -dd_sw -px1920 -py1080 -cpu2 -archive

That should do the trick. You know how to add those switched into the desktop shortcut to WitP AE, ja?

Hi Klink,

Thanks for the response! Well, I've seen lots of code and "switches" (whatever those are) in other posts, but I am completely computer illiterate and have no idea where they go. Well, obviously I assume it's in the WITP folder somewhere, but no idea which file to change or how to do it. Simple step by step instructions would be most appreciated (perhaps a sticky of such instructions would be appropriate to help others). I'm embarrassed to ask for such basic help but I really want to continue my campaign if I can! Thanks!

See screenshot; properties of your shortcut on the desktop to WitP AE, if you got a desktop in Win 8.1 ;) I hate tiles! :D

Going through the same thing as you - you'll definitely need the -w switch for performance but others like -px/py are hit or miss & just have to try things till it works right. Not sure if you need the -cpuX or not depends if you've a multicore pc or not. As Klink said, the switches will need to be added on the WITPAE desktop icon after the witpae exe file name (right click on the icon & look for the properties in the popup & that will show what Klink is showing. In the WITPAE folder there should be a file called readme which will have the different switches & what effect they should help w/

Thanks for the help guys! One other quick question...do I need to be running the beta version for the changes to take effect? I'm currently running with the last official patch.
thanks again!

All of the performance switches were present in the last official patch.

Many switches were put in the first patch and a handful came later, but all have been there for a few patches.

Hi guys,

Thanks again for the help. The switches are working perfectly except for one minor issue. I get the full screen with a px1920 py1080 setting, but everything (map, units, bases, buttons, etc) appear to be miniaturized. If I change the px py numbers at all it automatically reverts to less than full screen mode (though everything appears normal sized). Is there any way to get the full screen and normal sized map/icons? Either way the game is still quite playable. Thanks!

Your screen resolution is probably 1920 X 1080. Try something just a little smaller with the -p switches like 1910 X 1070. I assume you're using the -w switch too? If you use this with the -w switch, you will get a window, but it will take up just shy of the entire screen.
