Some observations:

1) I have never been able to obtain a classification (beyond general type of sub) with any airborne platform using it's sonobuoys. It appears that it is not possible regardless of the launching platform, even the P8 would not provide me with classifications. (even with a very loud sub right on top of numerous buoys). I also notice that the general type classification only seemed to happen when I made the sub cavitate. I think a modern platform like a SH-60 should be able to distinguish between a biological and a submarine.....?? (if not, I would like to understand why not).

So the question is, why not..there must be some feature of the platform listening to the buoys that determines what kind of classifications are possible?

2) Buoys dropped by aircraft cannot be used by surface vessels, I don't have a good reference if this is really possible though.

3) I've only been able to get classifications with the hull mounted or towed array sonars on surface vessels? What governs this?

EDIT: I've been able to classify a few subs with just an SH-60 but it takes quite a long time...

I've just ran a small scenario - P-8 against Type 212 sub, DIFAR F sonobuoys only.
At 15kts (not cavitating) it took 12 minutes to ID a type (SSK) and 30 minutes to ID a class (S 181 U31 [Type 212]).
At 8kts it took 20 minutes to ID a type (SSK). Exact class was not matched even after hours of dropping sonobuoys.
At 4kts it took 25 minutes to ID a type (SSK). Exact class was also never found.

Any diesel Boat running on batteries is almost impossible to classify
Bio contacts gather round slow moving objects so the game is echoing rl as the operator will thoughly investigate the bio contacts(better safe etc)
Nucs in the game are too easily classified imho

I will retry my original scenario of the SH-60 being unable to distinguish between Subs and Biologicals...

Exact classification I can appreciate being difficult, but general type based on blade count and just the actual sound in practice is not that challenging. Biologicals don't have signatures anything like that of non-biologics. I will report back.

Okay. Build 570. This seems to have been greatly improved!

I was able to get classifications of type after around 20 minutes of good tracking.

SH-60
P8
OHP Frigate.

All with them being the single detecting unit. Targets were Victor III and Foxtrot.
