Game Hangs After Save or Idiot User?

I've caused the attached game to hang by doing the following. In the Solomons the CW found and surprised the IJN BB and sub there. The CW got 8 surprise points and used 6 to increase their combat column 3 times and 2 to decrease the IJN column once. I saved the game at that point and shut MWiF down. Later, I reopened MWiF, loaded the attached game turn and was stuck .The form to fight the battle, after allocating the surprise points, is gone and I don't see a way to proceed. The button for advancing the phase is greyed out also.

The only way I found to continue the game was to load a save from the auto save directory. It had saved the game at the point where I choose whether or not to fight and which sea areas to fight in. I was able to enable the "Set Die Rolls" interface to get back where I was and continue my game.

Is this a bug or am I an idiot user? Am I missing some simple pulldown or checkbox that will get the neccessary form back?

I think there are still some places were saving is not working correctly. Placing units phase is also one of them, it can skip nations after reloading.

Saving the game in the middle of a naval combat should not be permitted by the code. There are too many situations where a naval combat can occur (e.g., as part of a naval interception of a forced rebase due to the overrun of naval units during an advance after combat). Keeping track of all the variables involved is quite insane. Instead, the program simply doesn't permit saving the game during a naval combat - but it seems to have let one slip through (sigh).[:(]
