I installed DW universe both with the installer and with steam.

The game won't start, there is no error message simply no reaction. I have windows 7N and the installation of the windows media player did not work. Is that the problem?

Would be glad for any suggestions.

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble. What i need to be able to help you is a post of your DxDiag. Some things to try in the meantime is:

Reinstall the redistributable in this order (which can be located in your games install directory in the folder called Redist): Install .net 4.0 (File name: dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe)
Install Direct X (File Name: DXSETUP.exe)
Install XNA (File Name: xnafx40_redist.msi)
Reboot your computer after this and then try to run the game.

If this does not work please uninstall the game, Make sure any Anti Virus software you may have has been temporarily disabled and rerun the install allowing all the Redistributable software to run as well. Please try the above process first.

Hi Barleyman

You are missing either Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player. These must be installed and enabled.

You can check this in Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off

Okay, I got it. I had to go into control panel -> programs > programs and features -> windows features -> turn media player on.

This is in Win 8.1 x64

Seriously people, that's way beyond obscure. Plz fix or do somefink.

As someone who just bought the game and also a Game Dev, I have to ask why do I need either of those two external programs loaded to run the game? If I was a Chrome/Firefox user and I don't use/want IE installed, how do I load and play this game? The fact that is not clearly spelled out as a requirement on Steam with the other system specs should probably be addressed as well to avoid more headaches with folks not having these application.

I encountered this issue too. And I don't really understand why IE must be enabled.
I have seen programs(read game launchers)run correctly, with IE embedded and disabled in control panel.

IE is used to display the in-game Galactopedia help.

WMP is used for videos and music.

I was unable to install a single version for the WMP. Even the one who clearly is for my Windows 7N does not work.

just add all the bit that are missing, i wouldn't have the N version myself, as if this is the first game that doesn't work, i'm sure it won't be the last and most need the missing bits, but yes it needs adding to the spec as well so sorry for your missing bits as well

IE is fine as it is. Majority of people do have it by default anyways. You *should* give clear english error message, though. "Hey dumbass, you thought you was clever erasing IE? No game for you!"

However the media player.. It's NOT installed by default on win8 or at least mine didn't. I definitely did NOT remove it at any point. Again, if the damn game gave clear error message "No media player? What are you? Amish?" this would cause a lot less aggravation.
