Keep starting locations by default.
Option to check regenerate starting locations.
Otherwise what is the point if you cannot use the original starting locations and regenerate what you want? [&:]

I actually wanted to try Ancient with a different race.
I went through the custom setup and set all my options up, but it loaded me in as humans. I am not sure if the story line and events were there. It did obey my prewarp and size, but I don't know if the AIs got theirs too. I didn't play it, because I don't want to invest time if it wasn't going to be what I expected.

Apparently starting positions for AI civs won't work too.

if feature does not work as intended, then it's a bug and belong to appropriate subforum.
otherwise don't expect devs to see it.

I have never checked myself, but are the other races in the theme playable? checking the race files would be where I would start.

Theme? Not sure what you mean. I'm just loading a previously played random map but all of the starting locations are completely different.

My bad, quoted the wrong post, I was on about only starting up as humans from Fleshbits.
I will fire DW up and go through what you have reported.

Tested this extensively, it works fine [8D]
1) If you set a custom map up, edit it to your requirements, save it in your apps folder with your save games and then start a new custom game with that map loaded as default with the loading option in the first screen in the custom game setup the locations are randomized as per a new custom game normally, just using the Galaxy Map you edited.
2)Make sure you have a working, stable theme,
create a maps folder in the root directory of that theme
copy the savegame / map from your saves folder in the apps directory to the new maps folder in your theme.
Load DW and then start a new game with your theme selected as default
You will then have a new window come up that will state that there is a custom scenario for this theme, play that or just start a custom game,
Ignore the custom start and click on the play the scenario button
Once the scenario has loaded all the races will be where they were when you saved it after editing it.
Summing up, you need to have the save game / map in a maps folder in a theme for a fixed, predetermined start.

Er what? What is a theme? How do I make one? Do what? Do where? I just want to play the same map as it was intended. This seems way too complicated. [&:] Good to know I can do that if I can ever figure out how though! [:D]
Why not just have the starting locations stay on the map like everything else with an option to randomize like everything else can be?

In hindsight it should be called the Universe Modding
Reference, not Universe Modding
Guide.
