Two questions:
1. When is the Beta expected to start?
2. Is the multiplayer mode ready to testing as well?

The first stage should begin early next week. It'll allow only a small amount of players to iron out any major performance or design bugs before larger groups of players are added in the following stages.
Multiplayer will be disabled for the first stage(s) because we want players to focus on singleplayer for now. Aside from some UI work it's all functional though, so it shouldn't be long before we activate it.

Next week sounds fantastic. I've really been wanting a war game that has a Panzer Corp play style with carriers, aircraft and subs. If it's final release has an editor to play with then I'm in heaven. (nevermind. I checked the web site. It will have an editor! Woop!)

Yes, it has a powerful built-in map/scenario editor. However we also decided to disable it for the first beta phase because we don't want a storm of scenario editing related questions until we've covered the more important stuff [;)]
If all goes well it shouldn't be more than a week or 2-3 before both editor and multiplayer gets unlocked though. We are very interested in seeing user-created content after all!

Update: The beta build has been completed earlier this week and we're now going through the process of creating installer and setting everything up. Hopefully the download links will still go out this week!

when the email arrives i'd hazard a guess, saying yay or nay, good luck, as i've always been answered in the past anyway, one way or another, either thanks for the offer but at this time bla bla, or yes you have been successful and welcome to the team, here is the instructions etc bla bla
Hopefully the download links will still go out this week!
so fingers crossed one of us will get one soon, or both, or neither

depending on how many they want and how many has applied...

The beta test will be split in several stages, each stage adding a new batch of testers. Generally the amount of testers added grows with each stage, the first group being quite small. We're doing this to make sure we always have a pair of fresh eyes looking at the game throughout the beta testing process.
So even if you don't get into the first stage the chance you get added later on will increase with time. I'm not sure if you also get a "you are not selected yet" email, but we'll make a public announcement with each new beta stage anyway so that'd be the time to watch your inbox extra closely [:)]

I am definitely interested in this. Luckily, my classes are over in few weeks and the job is letting up a bit.

Yes it has started. The first stage only contained ~20 testers to potentially iron out any major problems, so it was a very limited selection. If all goes well we'll move to the second phase in about a week though, which will add a bigger batch of testers.
Sorry if you didn't make it in yet! There has been quite a bit of interest so we may not be able to let be able to let everyone in, certainly not right away!
