Supreme Demotion?

For some reason, I was looking at TF commanders for some PT boats. I noticed PT-74 must be the most important boat in the USN:
What's more, the TF can only be commanded by a RADM! I can't select a JO to command this TF (without changing boat skipper first).

On the Form TF screen, do you have 'auto-select commander' on or off?
I'd just replace Ziggy w/ a competent, high-aggression LT, & let him run the show.
If you ever disband & reform the TF, add PT-74 last, it'll become the flagship again.

I'm guessing it was off. I didn't turn it "on".
As for replacing him, yes... I just thought it was funny that he somehow ended up skippering a PT boat.

It's not the AI, it's a database bug. Sprague is set as commander of PT-74 in the stock scenarios.

Hey now! To be fair to the guy, I bet he makes a whale of a PT commander. [;)]

He's also defined as a ship commander, so if you replace him as CO of PT-74, you still can't assign him to command a TF. You could place him in command of a carrier, then try to make that carrier flagship of a carrier TF.
Same thing for Thomas Sprague.

Besides Sprague, the stock scenarios also have Rear Admiral Robert W. Hayler in command of the submarine S-47, and Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd commanding an LCI(M).
IRL, Adm. Kidd was killed on USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. Instead of Adm. Hayler, the developers probably meant Lt. Cmdr. Frank E. Hayler, who commanded S-47 from October 1942 to early 1944.

For a game of this magnitude, this is a disgrace.

Let me give you a little advice. Don't worry too much about expensive commanders. You have better uses for those PPs. Find inexpensive commanders who know what they're doing. There are plenty of cheap but competant captains to run carriers, and if need be carrier TFs. Nagamo is running the KB. You want to replace hime with Yamaguchi. Nagamo is just fine. Use those PPs to free up troops in Manchukuo.

In a game of this magnitude, the AI is just a sparring partner. Move immediately to human opponents as soon as you get the basics. They'll kick your butt with intelligence, instead of the cheating the AI does to be relevant.

For a game of this magnitude, this is a small database error.

Ah, that explains why I've never found Ziggy Sprague when setting up CVE TFs. Would be great if that could be fixed. The hero of Leyte Gulf (well, one of them, anyway) needs a proper place in this game.
Cheers,
CC

So the bigger the game, the more data is used and you think it is strange that minor mistakes are made? Compare it to a modern day project.. They include a certain percentage of the budget as a reserve because they KNOW they forgot stuff... The bigger the project, the bigger the amount of money. You can tell WitP AE is a work of love.. There are relatively few mistakes..

I'm with Cannonfodder: It's no disgrace that a few minor things got overlooked in the making of this beast.
