I generally micro pretty much everything and so I set things like designs and retrofit to manual across the board. I update the Private Designs as well.

The question is ... If I have the ship designs themselves set to retrofit but have ship design manual, will Private owned units auto upgrade. I am talking about units like Freighters, Passenger ships, etc...

The designs themselves shouldn't update until you modify them in the create design tool (And AFAIK the auto update only changes modules to the next tier when researched, they don't add or remove modules). Retrofit means that once those designs have been updated then the AI will automatically choose when to upgrade existing ships to the latest design.

OK that is what I was hoping for ... I will manage the designs and all designs are set to auto retrofit so any ship under AI control should get updated by the AI.
