I just played a bit of one game and don't fully understand everything happening, but in the first auction I acquired a work of art, yet didn't get any victory points. Bug or am I missing something here?

Also - you don't get VP's for conquering territories? That seems counter-intuitive to me.

You get VP's for activating the Art later. VP's are for territory but only if you have more than anyone else. You also get VP's for the most active cards to the artwork helps you here too. Its all about having the most, techs, territories, castles etc.
