I'm a new player, and I'm wondering what the story events are when setting up a custom game? I am looking to play a sandbox game without events causing any major shakeups, but smaller events would be fun. What options would you recommend selecting/not selecting?

From what I've played, turn off Return of the Shakturi. You can have disasters and race events though.

In Universe can you deal with the Shakturi - wipe them, or contain them, and carry on sandboxing?

You can wipe the Shakturi out if you do it as soon as they appear, whereas containing them will be impossible if you let them go too long as their homeworld is amazing at pumping out hundreds of ships.
