Rest Settings in Orders

We had some topics about rest but I think in all these threads we never had a specific answer to what the Rest settings in an order exactly do, but that is what I would like to know.
Now I had issued a lot orders in the night(01:00-02:00)and had to fitness that many got not carried out, probably because of the rest settings I chose as I set most of them to Normal in the hope they would utilize as much of the night as possible, but instead many formations used stay resting till 06:29 what usually meant the would not be at the FUP in time to assault on 07:00.
I tried an older save of that night and set them to None rest, this made the move right away to the FUP but there they only were Reorganizing till the morning despite reaching 100% Cohesion hours before the assault.
Now I simply wonder if we could get more details of what the various settings achieve so I get a clue what settings to use to:
A. Achieve a maximal period of rest.
B. Be still in time at the FUP to make the assault.
It seems to me that the settings take not only the units fatigue itself into account but also the time of day, I guess that is why on Normal a lot had a rest task till 06:29.
I hope one can provide more details because it's rather disappointing to see the careful planing of the night not unfold at all with many orders.

As standard I usually have my rest settings at None and only when really needed\necessary change them to normal.

First off, rest is more focused on fatigue than cohesion.
In addition being impacted by fatigue, cohesion is impacted by quality of leadership, unit training, unit morale, and unit experience as modified by the ordered activity, suppression status, and casualties.
Normal rest results in recovering from fatigue by remaining idle for up to eight hours, usually starting at nightfall. An uninterrupted "normal" rest period allows the unit to recover from all fatigue.
Minimum rest results in fewer hours of rest on an "as needed" basis, instead of only at night.
None rest results in the unit working 24/7 until totally exhausted.
How quickly a unit recovers using rest is also impacted by the unit's deployment status. A unit exercising an attack order when it stops to rest will recover less fatigue than a unit deployed in a defensive formation that stops to rest.

It would be cool if you could set the times of rest for each unit. Or even a rest after...order and set hour many hours after..so rest after move to for 4 hours etc etc.

Doesn't address recovering from fatigue, particularly when fatigue impacts cohesion and morale, which "rest" is supposed to address.
CO does a pretty good job of reflecting the real impacts on combat effectiveness from a commander's lack of attention to supply, and controlling the intensity of activity for troops.
Bottom line is the human commander isn't moving chess or checker pieces.

One of the good things about the auto rest that happens at night, is there is no command delay to wake them up, and no interruption to their present orders.
If you are monitoring the units correctly as soon as you see they have gone into auto rest, clicking on the no rest button will see them moving again, with no interruption to previously assigned orders.
If they are too fatigued to move they will continue to rest of course, usually after only a few hundred meters.
The auto rest is another good reason why you should increment the end time of your orders to way in advance of its allotted time, or even to the end of the scenario, this way your orders will not expire during the rest period, causing another command delay.
