21st Century Scenario?

Hey my name is David Willis,

I'm new to Advanced Tactics but had been playing Peoples Tactics for a long time prior to now but more on me later. I was wondering if anyone had made any Modern (as in 21st Century) scenarios for use? I would like to play a game based in Modern principals with tanks such as the M1A2 SEP and the T-72, as well as anything from F-22s, to BMPs, even have special places in the map as IEDs, Mines, etc that may only kill a few people but destroy the unit's morale and slowly eat away at the entire force's morale over time.

Really a scenario based on the events so far of 2013 leading up to the present day and on until around late 2016 (as far as we can really predict military technology). If possible it would be nice to have an event that we could recreate, but was defused in real life, but would spiral in to war in the game, such as what happened between the Obama and Putin camps, say the old Cold War tension comes back and Russia declares war, so in a preemptive strike America sends some of it's 10 Aircraft carriers to the Pacific ocean to commence Aerial assault, meanwhile Russia continues to push it's Air Force which outnumbers the US West to use numbers to try and gain air superiority. When American troops land in the Eastern edge of Russia, China has a decision to make, either stay neutral and continue to stand to the side and stay in tune with the American economy, OR declare war on the U.S., withdraw all ties economically, and help Russia by pushing a literal anthill of troops Northeast, possibly even drawing North Korea in on the action, at which point South Korea and Europe join in and Russia, China and North Korea become effectively the new Axis powers, where they fight on two fronts, but with much more favorable terrain conditions BUT on their home turf.

Or another possibility includes continuing and upping the pressure in Afghanistan, and adding a huge plot turn which includes Iran finally entering the war, which gives all the nations of the Middle East the choice of either joining Iran, staying neutral and keeping Oil production strong for the U.S. or going against Iran. Finally Pakistan then becomes a big piece of the puzzle, and begins to go one way or the other, meanwhile the conflict spreads all through the Middle East, increasing in intensity.

Another possibility would be the current events in Chicago, where as of recent Gang activity has created a massive death toll in the city, finally the entire government of Illinois (in scenario) can decide to clean up the streets by sending mass amounts of police and National Guard forces to the area. However, political pressure from people who believe the action is considered Martial Law under the Posse Comitatus Act will force the Illinois government to end the National Guard involvement, disbanding all the National Guard units active on the map, then the Police Force will suffer a major blow to morale in doing so which forces them to have less ability to track (recon) and destroy gang activity (losses to the Gangs would be considered primarily arrests as well as some kills, just because it says kills). Something to add more depth to the game would include a jail break at one of the Max security prisons in Illinois which fields a mass formation of yet more Gang members which cannot be easily dealt with by a police force stretched thin focusing primarily on Chicago.

Another AMAZING idea would be to pit the world's Armies with the most Infantry versus each other. A war between China and India would be an almost old school style war, with primarily Infantry doing the majority of the fighting. Or if not India vs China, do China versus it's enemies in the south, and to it's east in Japan, clearly they have been building war hardware for war, so it would try to predict what they're doing and make a political scenario where China and North Korea continue to build hardware for an unknown purpose, and let the player or AI decide who and when it wants to attack anyone from Japan to placing Missile batteries in range to launch on America which promptly gets an action card alerting it to begin advancing on China. However, before they reach China, China is able to destroy a few ships, maybe even an Aircraft Carrier, which gives America the card to create Aircraft Carriers with adequate anti-ballistic missile capabilities. Or even develop planes which specialize in taking flight quickly and intercepting missiles. Missiles could either work as Artillery pieces that fire but then self destruct to prevent being used every turn, or as Air units that function like Kamakaze type units which fly to and land on a target and are destroyed on impact.

On me, I'm currently immersed in the Tweber American Civil War scenario as the Confederacy, current in late 1862 playing against the AI with Union troops reaching as far as Atlanta (getting slaughtered obviously).

Hi David.

3 of Grymme's scenarios come to mind. He did a WWIII scenario, but it wasn't 21st century it was more 20th century. He also did an Afghan war scenario but that was Soviet era I think.

He did a Vietnam war scenario based on Victory Games boxed tabletop game. Some of his scenarios are for sale or were. He hasn't been around these boards for quite some time.

You've got some great ideas, modding ATG is not an easy thing.

Hey David,

Grymme did a really nice 80's WWIII scenario, where the Cold War turns hot. It's in the scenario bank, I believe. Also I know Lion of Judah has alot of fairly modern Africa and Middle East scenarios. I haven't played any of them, but they look interesting. You could also attempt testing out some of your ideas by creating scenario's with the editor. It's incredibly versatile once you get the hang of it. It can be a little difficult to wrap your head around at first, so start out small but once you get a feel for it you can do alot with it.....I even managed to put together a Space Opera scenario using it. One caveat is that it's alot better to shoot for a Multi-Player scenario. The further away you get from the base ATG design, the more the AI has problems figuring out how to handle things.

I have pretty much mastered the editor... for Peoples Tactics; I haven't even looked at the editor for Advanced Tactics yet because I have a feeling it's about to look like something out of a C++ directory. I guess I'll take a look around, or if someone wants to do a joint project like what Tweber and all them did on those Campaigns, I'd be down as a researcher, event coordinator, etc. Just provide well based ideas and information that instead of you having to pull off Google, I could just make it all available.

if you would like help or one of my scenario's to tinker around with let me know. I have taken a hiatus, but i'm slowly working my way back into this game.
