Remind me about bypass

Can anyone fill me in on the state of play with HQs and the bypass tickbox? If you put in an attack now then the HQ stays well out of it, sometimes (depending on what you order) several kms back from the action. But when the engagement is over the HQ needs to join the front line units (assuming you haven't ticked defend in situ) and then it can sometimes have a long, lonely hike through terrain that might meanwhile have changed hands. When it runs into enemy units (often recovering routed units from the fight, for example) en route it seems to seize up now. Fair enough. But what order do I give to get the HQ to go round the enemy, so that it can be safely reunited with its units? Do I tick 'bypass' or not? Is the procedure the same if you have a base in tow?

I have not found the bypass order to be very effective, in this situation.

What I usually do, if I suspect the HQ will have problems selecting its route, is to give it a move order with waypoints that I have set for it.
This is after drag selecting the line units, and giving them a defend in situ order.

If the route needs to be cleared of stragglers, you can always use one of the line Coy's to do it, by giving it an individual order to probe back towards the HQ.

Sounds sensible. Thanks Daz.

Bypass primarily works for moves by the main body. In the case of an attack you will find the main body gets to the objective by an assault, not a Move.
