Tried to update from game menu got message "C:\Matrix Games\Battles from the Bulge\update exe abnormal program termination[&:][&:]

Me too! I just bought this with the Market Garden add-on. The updater froze up and gave me a runtime error. Now if I click on the update button, I get the same message right away. Otherwise the game plays fine. Currently downloading the latest patch directly from Matrix. Crossing my fingers it works

OK, so I see the runtime error with the updater was addressed in another thread. I downloaded the hotfix for that from the thread. Unless you hear otherwise, assume, at least for me, that the problem is solved. [:)]
