Air Combat Tutorial

Hello everyone.
I've been playing around using the tutorials, and I'm confused with the EA-6B's role in the Air Combat tutorial scenario.
I'm former Navy, and thought I had a pretty decent understanding of the various roles of the Navy Aircraft. (granted this scenario takes place prior to my enlistment period)
I keep sending my A-7's into the Bombing Range area with the intent of knocking out the SAM sites, an I am never successful. I'm coordinating my EA-6B jamming and the SHRIKE ARM's to knock out the SAM sites.
And each time I attempt the scenario, I lose my ARM aircraft prior to eliminating the SAM sites.
I'm positive this is a tactical error on my part...
Where would a novice such as myself find such info?
Also, how come when attempting to launch my Walleye's and ARM's I have the aircraft at the launch altitude indicated as being within guidelines, and yet when I manually attempt the launch to destroy a target, I get an popup message saying I am below the allowable altitude? If you need me to give specifics, please let me know.
Thanks everyone, not only for your help but also for all the work done on this fantastic simulation.

Hi Nutworld,
Could you upload a save at the point your A-7s are getting whacked so that we can take a look at what's happening?
Thanks!

I'm not quite sure how to do so, but I would be glad to. If you don't mind pointing me in the correct direction, as to how.
Thanks

Happened to play this scenario myself today.
I used my F-14s, split into two groups, one on the northern and one on the southern axis, to bait the SAMs into shooting, this allowed my A-7s to close into Shrike range and loft a whole bunch of them in there.
Just dont forget to turn around in time
Altitude wise, keep in mind that the Database values for a weapon (if thats what you are looking at) will be sea level altitudes, wheras in this tutorial there is quite a bit of terrain elevation, which may be causing you problems. Especially because I think AGL altitude only gets displayed when a plane is below 10.000 MSL. So if you have high elevation, you could be seeing 10000 MSL without knowing what the AGL is and start seeing errors.
If this doesnt help you figure it out, give me the altitude that you see the unit is at as well as the message from the weapons dialogue and we'll see if we can solve the puzzle.

For the first time, tonight, after doing some searching the internet, these forums and re-reading manuals and addendum's, I replayed this scenario for the umpteenth time, but only lost 1 aircraft (A-7E) to the SAMS, and eliminated all of them.
I can't state exactly WHY this time, other than a combination of just playing the scenario over and over, as well as doing a better job of paying closer attention to SAM ranges and attacking the SAM sites from longer ranges with my AARM's and finishing them off with my other bombs.
Thanks everyone for helping to clarify things, and also giving me ideas and answering questions that I never asked, such as attack levels being above sea level not above ground level, which also might have been a part of my problem

In Scenario-folder you have file(s) called Autosave (one without number is latest, numbers indicate autosaves made corresponding seconds before last autosave). Zip the file. Go to forum Tech support, make topic. Use Post Reply, not Fast Reply. That way you have in bottom left and option: File "Click here to upload". It accepts only .zip,.txt,.gif and .jpg, thus need to zip other type of files. Use that to upload your autosave file.

Have you tried to create SEAD Patrol for the A-7s, particularly those carrying the Shrike missiles. I also included the Growler in the same flight as escort. Worked most of the time for me.

I would say that the game-play is fairly accurate for the time period. The Shrike missile was a pretty close range ARM and it's difficult getting through this scenario without the loss of a A-7 or two. I worked on F4-G's while in the Air Force and those guys were very happy when the HARM was developed.
