AIR GROUP TARGET RESET

I thought I should post this since I'm not sure if it's WAD or not.

Several bomber groups targeted ground troops at Bellary in India. I set the target. They flew. They all targeted one division in their bombing runs at Bellary.

Apparently the next turn the division moved away to Hyderabad. I left the bombers set to continue attacking at Bellary. Instead they went for Hydrabad. I looked later after my opponent graciously allowed a replay on the turn, and the AI had reset their target to Hyderabad.

It seems impossible to keep a target to attack ground troops in a base defined by the player without risk of this changing if one of the units moves out of the base. I could check every bomber group every turn, but as the game gets more complex I'm sure there will be days when I want the same as the previous turn and do not check to make sure. (Actually, after this I will probably check, but others may not and this could be a problem for them as well).

Here is a pic of the reset group. I could find a save if you want to check it out, but don't have it hand right now. Let me know.

Thanks!

This has been a standard component of the game since the UV days.

Squadrons bombing ground troops will adjust their targeting to the next hex the ground troops move to even though you as commander can only target a hex and not troops.

Never thought to wonder if it was WAD.

As far as I can tell Erik, it's always been like that (like Hans said).
For sure it's not ideal ( cause when you want to target an hex, you are not ordering to target a particular unit, so who cares if it moves out?) but there's an easy workaround.
We all have to check every day our orders regularly.

There are many other things that aren't completely ideal, but I think this one is more or less WAD.

It has its pros and cons.

It means LCU can't dodge air bombing for a turn by moving out of a hex and reduces the micromanagement necessary to keep the bombers on target.

However, if said LCU moves into a hex within three of a base with CAP you may find your bombers flying into the CAP.

I always thought, never tested though, if you click on the base icon that stays the target, if you click on the LCU icon, you target a LCU and if it moves you keep that as the target.
This also happens if the base becomes empty.
Maybe....

Yes it is a targeting thing.
The recorded target (as being the location # from the editor) for a group is the base # or the first of the stack of units in the hex. If that 'targeted' unit moves out of the hex, it is still the group's target. As mentioned above, I thought you could control it by which icon you clicked on as the target.

I always do (try) to click on the base hex. I'll keep my eyes open to see if this makes a difference in future. I'd just never seen the actual chosen target change to another base hex (Hyderabad) but maybe this unit was railed out and therefore the target changed.

Of course I can look at each air group each turn. The easy route, Nick suggests! [:D]

Hi, noticed the same, it seems that the bombers will pick up their target unit ID as target and keeps it once the mission is flown. A workaround to this is to "reset" target base each turn ...
