Takana : I have the same problem as you with a steam release. the last version I played was the 1.9.5.1 so I'm doing this:
Go to the directory C: \ Users \ [yourusername] \ AppData \ Roaming \ Code Force Limited \ Distant Worlds \ 1.9.5.1 \ <= for me it's the only version containing save game, and I copied all the files this directory.
Then I remove all files (making a backup) in \ Documents \ My Games \ Distant Worlds Universe\. I copied here the other files and apparently it works. I hope it'll help you.
