I have a concern that I haven't been able to figure out. Do Steam updates affect saved games? I've had an instant with another Matrix Game where I was not able to play a campaign I was in the middle of once I loaded the game in Steam and there was an update.

You used to be able to designate a game not to be updated automatically in Steam...but now I see they have removed that capability. I've got the Matrix version...so maybe it's best not to use Steam. When playing the more strategic games I sometimes take several months to complete them...and sometimes updates aren't backwards compatible.

Is my concern valid? ...or am I just paranoid?

Usually the updates are compatible with older save games, but unfortunately sometimes that's not possible.
If you want to be sure, just deactivate the game auto updates on Steam API and check the changelog for any information regarding the compatibility.
If there's no information regarding retro compatibility, then activate the auto-update for updating the game.
