Ship template problems

This may take some following but basically my ships designs that I saved are not there, only the last one.

I created a basic Escort design and saved it. I then saved the selected designs to disk. I then took the new escort design, copied it and redesigned it as a Frigate, saved it and saved the selected designs to disk. These steps were repeated through Destroyer, Cruiser, and Capital ship. Once the Capital ship was complete I had five new designs in orange which to me means they have not been built. I then quit the scenario without saving, reloaded it and reloaded the my ship designs and all was well. I then quite the game, again without saving it.

I've just started the game back up sometime later, loaded the scenario, loaded my ship designs but the only one that is there is the last one, the capital ship[&:][&:][&:][&:]

Try setting the filter in the Design Screen to "All Designs," then open the ship design to see if there are any errors (red text) or warnings (yellow text; the only warning of any great importance is the one about the ship's size). Also, change your automation settings so that either ship design is manually controlled or the ship roles that you're playing with are set to manual upgrades. You can also try looking in the drop-down menus of the screen where you can purchase ships en masse; as long as your designs are buildable and not obsolete, they'll show up in the drop-down menu, though in order to be the default design, they need to be the most recently created non-obsolete buildable design.

Thanks for the reply

I fell into that trap when DW first came out. All the other stuff is now irrelevant as I have found the problem.

I was not saving the game. WHY should saving the game matter, the designs are saved to disk?? The whole idea of the templates is so you can use them in other games, it makes no sense.

My guess: saving design only saves the selected ones. I suspect it was the cap ship.

Try selecting the first design, and shift+click the last one. You'll notice that it selects multiple templates. Than you can save them in a batch. Cheers.

Hope I nailed your problem, as I ran into that too.

OK thought I'd cracked it and I have to an extent.

Can someone confirm that if I select 'Load Designs' I should be able import into the game any designs I have previously saved using the 'Save Selected Designs..' button.

I'm making the assumption that I'm correct. Well I can't. If I load the game I saved the designs under I have Escort through to Capital ship. See the next post

I just tried it, manually upgraded a escort design, saved a template under escort. Without saving started a new game, loaded the design.

Tried again, this time i edited the first design, just changed the class to frigate. Saved the design, not the game, started a new game.

The .dwd files are under documents/my games/Distant Worlds Universe/settings

As far is i understand it, dwd files can contain a single design, or a bunch of them. You can shift/strg click some(designs, not dwds) and make a single save out of them.

EDIT: After rereading the thread my conclusion is that you may think with "save selected designs" the game means "save everything thats in the list".

It actually means "save selected designs" as in windows explorer selection for cut/copy.

One thing to note about DW is that is basically has the windows explorer as an game engine. [;)]

The light it doth shine, thanks. I should also say thanks to Evan85, I misread the post.
