Multiplayer problem

I have a non-Steam version. I'm trying to do a multiplayer with someone who does have the Steam version. He has issued a challenge. When I log into the server through the multiplayer tab in the game, I don't see his challenge.
Is there a compatibility problem between Steam and non-Steam versions?

Sometimes what happens: Is someone took up the challenge before you got there, check with your intended MP opponent to see if this took place. The MP password for a specific challenge had been a safe way to insure this does not happen, it did work early on, but I don't know if it was fixed in the latest patch. Or you might try to post a challenge to see if it works that way, instead of the other way around. Good luck.....
