Destroyermen Mod?

Hi Guys,

Due to health issues it's been a few years since I did any activity in this forum, but I've recently started recovering from what turned out to be an Adrenal Gland (low Cortisol) problem. I've been inspired to get back into WiTP: AE to finally try and become competent in this monster.

One reason for this renewed interest, interestingly enough, was the extensive amount of reading I did while I couldn't stand up without fainting and other complications. Among this reading was Taylor Anderson's "Destroyermen" series.

Destroyermen - Wikipedia

Any of you who have read them know that it is an alternative world history that pretty much takes place in the WiTP:AE geography and in the same time frame. The book and WiTP are so linked in my head that I can't help thinking of the game while reading the novels. In fact, I pull up the game map just to check out locations in the fictional war.

Can't get it out of head that it would make a heck of a Mod to create a "Destroyermen" game out of WiTP:AE.

Has anyone else had this crazy idea? Has anyone tried it? Anyone want to try it?

I would certainly be willing to help with the "grunt work" to update tables or do map editing etc.

Gotta add.. it is amazing the cool stuff that has been happening here, been reading tutorials, AAR's, tip sheets and so forth to try and get up to speed. Truly, this is the "King of Games" in my view :)

My SO has the same problem. She thought it was thyroid, but it turns out her adrenals are very tired. The underlying problem has been lifelong ADD made worse by versed. She's getting that under control, but her cortisol levels are flat lined.

I haven't heard of the books. Depending on what sort of technology they have in that world and how detailed the books are, a mod may or may not be fairly easy to do. Though coming up with the OOB might be a bit of work.

I read book one a year ago and am trying to get hold of the other books in the series at a reasonable price! I found the first book's set up of the alternative world to be very interesting! Interestingly I think it could be done if Matrix would allow the use of their foundational system including the map. However given that the vessels in the book, with the exception of the DD (a "four stacker") are driven by the wind, the 40 NM hex might be problematic. And Bill, the first book is titled "Into the Storm" and the author is Taylor Anderson. Hal

John 3rd turn me on to that series. [:)] I haven't read the last book (only have to paperbacks). It's getting kind of hard to keep the list of characters straight now.

The series is a good combo of WW2 stuff and some SciFi, IMO.

I've been reading them in e-book format so the price has been reasonable at $5.99. Just broke down and bought book 9 - "Deadly Shores" for $10.99 instead of waiting for the price to drop. That's how "hooked" I am on the series, I NEVER pay that much for an e-book... till now [:D]

Here is the first volume in the series at Amazon

Into the Storm

Yes, I am now intent on getting more wargamers as addicted as I am... <evil laugh>

Good point about the relatively slow speed of the wind powered vessels in a game with 40 mile hexes. They do start converting to steam powered vessels so the speeds do increase, but even by book 8, the Grik ironclad "Battleships" can only make about 6 to 8 knots due to their size and weight from all the armor they carry.

I'm very sorry to hear about your SO :( We share a fairly rare condition, but that doesn't make it any easier to live with [:(]

I've been doing much better with Hydrocortisone tablets, but still sorting out a variety of ailments that might be related. I lost my appetite for awhile and my favorite foods didn't taste good to me any more. I lost 10 pounds before that turned around! Now I'm back to normal and gaining the weight back. Currently dealing with a strange skin sensitivity on my upper thighs and back. No rash or redness, but very painful to touch.

As you are aware, Adrenal glands control the Endocrine System and the list of symptoms that can result from low cortisol is a very, very long list that can make diagnosis difficult if the doctor isn't familiar with the problem (mine wasn't and totally blew the diagnosis after months of office visits that pretty much resulted in lame advice and pain killer prescriptions).

I finally ended up at the Emergency Room with my blood pressure dropping to 65/40 with fainting if I tried to stand up. Fortunately, the hospital staff, while doing a complete check for heart problems, quickly isolated the real problem.

My personal physician was completely embarrassed when he got the reports and quickly educated himself to prevent screwing up like that again. He didn't offer to refund my payments for 8 wasted office calls though!

He was only working out here in the desert "hardship area" to get some of his student loans forgiven and he just bailed out and returned to the East. I'm looking for a new doctor as I don't trust that clinic any more :( The hospital staff weren't openly critical but whenever the clinic name or my doctor's name was mentioned their body language and assorted vocal expressions conveyed what they thought of them LOL The clinic doesn't even have hospital admitting privileges and that should have been a warning.

Now I also need to find an Endocrinologist, but there are none to be had in northern Arizona... will have to drive all the way to Phoenix which is a four hour drive across the White Mountain range from here.

Meanwhile, though, my quality of life is vastly improved and my interest in wargaming restored.

But think about it, this could be a precursor to a game on the Napoleonic era of sail along WITP lines.... a bit slower, but maybe possible!

I think the concept has great possibilities. Other than single battle engagements in a tactical mode and as an afterthought in Napoleonic campaign games, has there ever been a strategic game of Napoleonic naval warfare? I can't recall one.

Obviously this would have to be much more than a mod, but perhaps a WiTP style worldwide game with land and naval incorporated. Add in the ability to fight out the naval battles in a tactical environment as well.

Time to dig out the CS Forester novels and get inspired :)

I LOVE this set of books. Highly recommend them to anyone. Michael has fallen for them. I think Taylor Anderson has some real genius in his writing and character development. Can anyone say...DENNIS SILVA or DOOM WHOMPER??!!

My 10-Year Old is reading the next-to-last one and then will start number nine this weekend. He is thoroughly entranced.

Doom Whomper... 25 mm anti-aircraft sniper rifle! What's not to like? And Dennis Silva is definitely the star "Character" (and I do mean "character" LOL)

Have you fired up WiTP:AE and let him follow the action on the game map?

Next he'll be wanting to play a game with you (if hasn't asked already).

Just think though, he'll probably be a grown man by the time the series is finished! I can see it running to 18 volumes.

Probably, I have them on my Amazon Wish List :) But I grew up devouring the Hornblower tales!

Ah, so much to read... and so few years left to do it in <sigh>

And so many games to finally play as well LOL

(I turn 68 in another month :P)
